Ram Tire Size, Load Index and Towing: A Practical Check Before Service

A tire size printed on a search result or sidewall is only the beginning of a fitment decision. A Ram used for commuting, ranch work, construction loads or trailer duty needs a tire that matches the exact truck configuration, the wheel, the axle load and the way the vehicle is actually used. This checklist helps owners collect the right information before a tire, TPMS, suspension or alignment appointment. It does not replace the driver-door placard, the owner’s manual or an inspection of the truck.

Start with the driver-door placard and the VIN

Open the driver door and photograph the placard before shopping. Record the original tire size, the cold inflation pressure for front and rear, the gross vehicle weight rating and the axle ratings. Then note the VIN, model year, trim, drivetrain, wheel diameter and whether the truck carries factory or aftermarket suspension parts. Ram publishes model-specific manuals and vehicle information through its official owner-manual portal; use the manual that matches the VIN rather than a generic chart.

If the truck already wears a different size, do not assume that size is approved simply because it clears while parked. Ask whether the wheel offset, overall diameter, load capacity and pressure requirement still match the truck. Load index, load range and pressure are different checks

The load index is a numerical code tied to the maximum load one tire can carry at its rated conditions. Load range describes the construction and pressure capability of many light-truck tires. Neither number should be selected in isolation. The replacement tire must support the load carried by its axle and must be compatible with the wheel and the pressure limits shown by the vehicle and tire manufacturers.

A higher load range does not automatically mean a better result. It can change ride quality, weight and pressure needs, while an underspecified tire can overheat or deform under payload and towing stress. For a working truck, bring the normal cargo list and trailer tongue-weight information so the technician is evaluating the real use case.

Do the payload and towing math before changing sizes

Start with the payload label for the exact truck, then subtract passengers, tools, accessories, cargo and trailer tongue weight. Added bumpers, toolboxes, bed covers and recovery gear all consume payload. Towing capacity alone does not prove that the rear axle, tires or payload rating remain within limits. If the remaining margin is small, keep the fitment conservative and verify the numbers before buying a taller or heavier tire.

  • Record loaded front and rear axle weights when possible.
  • Confirm the tire load capacity at the pressure appropriate for that tire and wheel.
  • Check that the wheel itself is rated for the load and pressure.
  • Include trailer tongue weight and weight-distribution hardware.
  • Recheck clearance at full steering lock and through suspension travel.

Overall diameter affects clearance, gearing and alignment

Changing the section width, aspect ratio or wheel diameter changes the tire’s overall diameter and shape. A small paper difference can become contact at the liner, control arm, step, mud flap or fender when the steering is at full lock or the suspension compresses. A larger diameter can also alter indicated speed, effective gearing and shift behavior. Wheel offset adds another variable because it moves the tire inward or outward.

After the final tires and wheels are installed, inspect clearance dynamically and then perform alignment service on the finished setup. Aligning first and changing the tire diameter or wheel offset immediately afterward creates a poor baseline. Existing cupping, feathering or one-sided wear should also trigger a check of suspension and steering components.

Set cold pressure and relearn TPMS correctly

Pressure should be checked cold, before highway driving or sun exposure changes the reading. Do not use the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall as a universal daily setting. Begin with the vehicle placard and adjust only when the vehicle and tire manufacturer’s guidance, actual axle load and service inspection support the change. All four tires should be measured with the same reliable gauge.

If wheels, sensors or positions change, the tire-pressure monitoring system may need inspection or relearn. A warning light can indicate low pressure, a failed sensor, an incompatible sensor or a relearn problem; it does not identify the correct replacement tire size by itself.

What to bring to the service appointment

Bring a photo of the placard, the VIN, current tire and wheel specifications, normal payload, trailer details and a description of any rubbing, vibration, pulling or abnormal wear. Mention suspension lifts, leveling kits, spacers and wheel-offset changes. With those facts, a technician can check fitment, pressure, clearance and alignment without guessing from a model name alone.

The safest sequence is simple: verify the exact truck, calculate the load, choose a compatible tire and wheel, inspect clearance, set pressure, complete any TPMS work and align the truck after the final setup is installed.
